Do Car Colours Really Affect Used Car Resale Value?

October 8, 2025 by Jeff Zaninelli

When you buy a car, there are many decisions to make. You might think about the brand, model, fuel type, or even safety features. But one thing that many car buyers don’t think about is car colour. The shade you choose doesn’t just affect how stylish your car looks on the road—it can also make a big difference when it’s time to sell.

At JZ Motors, we’ve seen first-hand how colour plays a role in resale value. Some shades are in high demand and sell faster, while others struggle to attract buyers. In this article, we’ll explore why colour matters, which colours hold value better, and what you should consider if you’re planning to sell your used car in Melbourne.

Why Car Colour Impacts Resale Value

Car colour is not just about personal style. It affects buyer demand, practicality, and long-term appeal. Here’s why:

  • Buyer psychology: Colours trigger emotions. White feels fresh and clean, black feels powerful, and red feels sporty. Buyers often choose based on these feelings.
  • Market trends: Some colours never go out of style, while others come and go like fashion trends.
  • Maintenance: Certain colours show scratches, dirt, and fading more easily, making them harder to keep looking new.
  • Resale pool: A car in a popular shade appeals to more buyers, which means you can often sell it faster and at a higher price.

The Most Popular Car Colours in Australia

In Australia, a handful of colours dominate the used car market. These shades are considered “safe” because they appeal to a wide audience.

1. White
White is the most popular car colour across the country. It’s simple, modern, and works well with almost every car type. White also has practical advantages—it reflects sunlight, making it a great choice for hot Australian summers.

2. Black
Black has always been associated with style and luxury. Many people love black cars for their sleek, bold appearance. However, black can be harder to maintain, as scratches, dust, and swirl marks show up easily. Even so, black cars usually command strong resale value, especially for luxury vehicles.

3. Silver and Grey
Silver and grey are timeless shades that suit both small and large cars. These colours are also great for hiding dirt and minor scratches, which makes them appealing to busy families or business fleets. Because of their practicality, silver and grey cars usually sell quickly on the used market.

4. Blue
Blue, especially darker shades, is steadily growing in popularity. It’s stylish yet not too bold, striking the right balance for buyers who want something different but still practical.

Colours That May Hurt Resale Value

Not all colours perform equally well in resale. Bold, bright, or unusual shades often appeal to fewer buyers.

  • Bright red: Sporty and eye-catching, but it doesn’t suit all car types. Hatchbacks and sports cars sell fine in red, but family cars and SUVs don’t.
  • Yellow and orange: Fun and unique, but they are niche. These shades often sit longer on the market.
  • Green and purple: Rare and distinctive, but not many buyers actively search for these colours.

Car Type vs Colour: Finding the Right Match

The effect of colour on resale value also depends on the type of car you’re selling.

  • Small cars and hatchbacks: Bright colours like red, yellow, and blue can actually work well here, as younger buyers often prefer bold shades.
  • Family cars and SUVs: Neutral colours such as white, grey, and silver sell faster. Families prioritise practicality and maintenance over style.
  • Luxury cars: Black, white, and metallic tones increase the sense of prestige, boosting resale appeal.
  • Commercial vehicles: White is the clear winner, as it looks professional and is easy to add business branding to.
  • Climate and Location: Another Important Factor

Car colour preferences also change depending on the environment.

  • Hot climates: White, silver, and other light colours are popular because they reflect heat better, keeping cars cooler. Cooler climates: Darker colours like black, dark grey, and navy blue are often more common since heat reflection isn’t a concern.

If you’re buying with resale in mind, consider your location and the preferences of local buyers.

Changing Colour Trends Over Time

Car colour trends shift with fashion, technology, and buyer preferences. What was once the most popular shade may become less desirable within a few years.

  • Early 2000s – The Era of Silver: Silver was the global favourite for almost a decade. It gave cars a modern, futuristic look and was heavily promoted by manufacturers.
  • 2010s – Rise of White and Black: White began dominating as car buyers associated it with cleanliness, simplicity, and modern design. Black, on the other hand, remained a strong choice for premium and luxury vehicles.
  • Current Trends – White Still Leads: Today, white remains the top choice in Australia, followed by black, grey, and silver. These colours are considered safe bets for resale because they appeal to the widest group of buyers.
  • Younger Buyers and Bold Shades: While older generations prefer neutral colours, younger buyers often experiment with red, blue, or even custom wraps. This is especially true in smaller cars and sporty models.
  • Influence of Electric Vehicles: With the rise of EVs, manufacturers are experimenting with brighter and futuristic shades—like metallic blues and greens—to set them apart from traditional cars.

What’s important to remember is that classic shades (white, black, grey, silver) always stay in demand, even when bold colours come in and out of fashion. If you plan to sell your car within 3–5 years, choosing a neutral colour is a safer long-term investment.

Do Car Colours Really Affect Used Car Resale Value?

Does Paint Condition Matter More Than Colour?

While car colour plays a role in resale value, many buyers care more about the overall condition of the paintwork than the actual shade. A well-maintained red car often sells faster than a white car with faded, scratched, or chipped paint.

Why Paint Condition Is So Important

  • First Impressions Count: When buyers see a car for the first time, the paint is one of the first things they notice. Dull or damaged paint makes a car look older than it really is.
  • Signals Car Care: A car with clean, polished paint often suggests that the owner has taken good care of the vehicle overall, including servicing and maintenance.
  • Resale Price Impact: Buyers are willing to pay more for a car that looks newer and fresher, regardless of its colour.
  • Protection Against Damage: Paint isn’t just cosmetic. It protects the car’s body from rust and corrosion. Damaged paint can lead to bigger (and more expensive) issues down the track.

Tips to Keep Your Paint Looking New

Maintaining your car’s paint is one of the easiest ways to protect resale value:

  • Wash regularly: Use proper car shampoos and microfiber cloths instead of harsh brushes.
  • Polish and wax: A good wax job at least twice a year keeps paint glossy and adds a protective layer.
  • Protect from the sun: Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a car cover to prevent UV fading.
  • Fix scratches early: Small scratches can be buffed out easily, but left untreated they may spread or rust.
  • Avoid parking under trees: Sap, bird droppings, and falling branches can damage the finish.
  • Consider paint protection: Ceramic coatings or professional paint protection films are popular with new car owners who plan to resell later.

Comparison: Neutral vs Bold Colours

Factor Neutral Colours (White, Black, Silver, Grey) Bold Colours (Red, Yellow, Orange, Green)
Resale Demand High – wider audience Lower – limited audience
Maintenance Easier – hides dirt and scratches Harder – shows wear more quickly
Resale Price Generally higher Often lower, unless niche demand
Best Suited For Families, luxury cars, business fleets Sports cars, hatchbacks, younger buyers

Final Thoughts

Car colour might not be the first thing you think about when buying a vehicle, but it has a big impact on resale value. If you want the best return when selling your used car, it’s smart to stick with classic shades that never go out of style.

At JZ Motors, we specialise in high-quality used cars in Melbourne. Whether you’re buying your next car or selling your current one, our team can guide you to make the best choice—not just for today, but for the future resale value as well.

How to Get Car Finance for Used Cars in Melbourne

August 26, 2025 by Jeff Zaninelli

Buying a used car is one of the smartest choices for many drivers in Melbourne. Not only do you save money compared to buying brand new, but you can also get a vehicle that suits your lifestyle without breaking the bank. The best part? You don’t need to pay for the entire car upfront. Car finance gives you the flexibility to spread the cost over time while enjoying the freedom of driving your chosen car today.

At JZ Motors Ferntree Gully, we understand that arranging finance can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers. That’s why we’ve created this simple guide to help you understand how to get car finance for used cars in Melbourne and what steps you should take to make the process easy and stress-free.

Why Choose Finance for a Used Car?

Buying a used car with finance is becoming more popular in Melbourne, and for good reason. Instead of saving for years to buy a car outright, finance gives you the freedom to get behind the wheel sooner while managing your budget more effectively.

Here are some key advantages:

  • Affordable Monthly Payments – Spreading the cost into regular instalments makes it easier to own a reliable car without straining your savings.
  • Access to Better Cars – With finance, you don’t have to settle for the cheapest option. You can consider higher-quality or newer vehicles that might be out of reach if you were paying in cash.
  • Financial Flexibility – Finance terms can be adjusted to suit your circumstances, whether you want smaller repayments over a longer term or faster repayment with higher instalments.
  • Preserve Your Savings – Instead of spending all your savings on a car, you can keep money aside for emergencies, investments, or other expenses.
  • Build or Improve Credit History – Regular, on-time repayments can strengthen your credit rating, which helps if you plan to apply for a home loan or personal loan in the future.
  • Peace of Mind with Warranties & Insurance – Many finance options can be bundled with extended warranties or insurance, giving you extra protection.

In short, car finance gives Melbourne drivers the best of both worlds: the ability to own a quality used car now while keeping payments manageable and finances secure.

Types of Car Finance Options in Melbourne

When it comes to financing a used car, Melbourne buyers have several options. Here are the most common ones:

  1. Secured Car Loan
    • The loan is secured against the car itself.
    • Lower interest rates compared to unsecured loans.
    • If repayments are not made, the lender can repossess the vehicle.
  2. Unsecured Car Loan
    • No security needed, but interest rates are higher.
    • Suitable if you want more flexibility or if the car is older and doesn’t qualify for a secured loan.
  3. Dealer Finance
    • Many dealerships, including JZ Motors, offer in-house finance options.
    • Convenient as you can choose the car and arrange finance in one place.
    • Competitive packages tailored to your budget.
  4. Personal Loan from a Bank or Lender
    • Offered by banks, credit unions, or online lenders.
    • Can be used for cars or other personal needs.
    • Approval depends on your income, credit score, and loan amount.
  5. Novated Lease / Salary Packaging
    • Arranged through your employer, where repayments come from your pre-tax salary.
    • Often includes running costs such as insurance and servicing.
    • Best suited for people who receive this option from work.

Eligibility Criteria for Used Car Finance

Before applying for used car finance in Melbourne, it’s important to know what lenders usually look for. While requirements can vary depending on the bank, finance company, or dealership, most will consider the following factors:

  • Proof of Income – Lenders want to see that you can comfortably manage repayments. Recent payslips, bank statements, or tax returns (for the self-employed) are usually required.
  • Employment Status – Full-time or part-time work is preferred, but some lenders also accept casual or contract workers if income is consistent. Self-employed applicants may need to show business financial records.
  • Credit History – A strong credit score increases your chances of approval and may secure you a lower interest rate. However, even if you have a less-than-perfect score, some lenders and dealerships (like JZ Motors) can still help with flexible finance options.
  • Identification Documents – A valid driver’s licence, passport, or other government-issued photo ID is required to verify your identity.
  • Residency Status – You generally need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Some lenders may accept applicants on certain eligible visas.
  • Age Requirement – You must be at least 18 years old to apply for finance in Australia.

💡 Tip for Buyers: Meeting these criteria doesn’t guarantee approval, but being prepared with the right documents and a clear budget can make the process smoother and improve your chances of getting approved quickly.

Steps to Get Car Finance for a Used Car in Melbourne

  1. Set Your Budget
Work out how much you can afford to pay each month. Don’t forget to include running costs like fuel, insurance, and servicing.
  2. Check Your Credit Score
Your credit rating can affect your interest rate. If it’s low, consider improving it before applying.
  3. Compare Finance Options
Look at banks, credit unions, and dealerships like JZ Motors to see which option offers the best rate and conditions.
  4. Get Pre-Approval
A pre-approved loan gives you a clear budget and makes the buying process smoother.
  5. Choose Your Car
Once you know your budget, browse used cars at trusted dealerships. At JZ Motors Ferntree Gully, we have a wide range of quality vehicles ready to drive away.
  6. Apply for Finance
Submit your application with the required documents. A finance team will review your details and confirm approval.
  7. Drive Away with Confidence
After signing the agreement, you can collect your car and enjoy the road ahead.

Tips to Secure the Best Car Finance Deal in Melbourne

  • Save for a Deposit – A higher upfront payment lowers your loan amount and interest.
  • Choose a Shorter Loan Term – Paying off your loan faster may reduce the total interest you pay.
  • Compare Interest Rates – Don’t just look at monthly payments; consider the overall cost of the loan.
  • Check for Hidden Fees – Be aware of processing charges, early repayment fees, or account-keeping costs.
  • Buy from a Trusted Dealership – Working with a reliable dealer like JZ Motors ensures transparent pricing and genuine advice.

Guide to Buying a Used Car in Australia

June 20, 2025 by Jeff Zaninelli

Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Smart Car Purchase

Buying a used car in Australia can be one of the smartest financial decisions you make—if you do it right. With a wide variety of vehicles, flexible financing, and competitive prices, pre-owned vehicles are popular among both first-time buyers and seasoned drivers. However, it’s essential to approach the process with a clear plan to avoid costly mistakes.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about buying a used car in Australia, including the benefits, what to look for, legal requirements, and tips to get the best deal.

Why Consider Buying a Used Car in Australia?

There are many compelling reasons Australians choose used cars:

1. Affordability
Used cars are significantly cheaper than brand-new models. You can get more features or a higher-end brand for a fraction of the original price.

2. Slower Depreciation
New cars lose 10–15% of their value the moment they leave the dealership. With used cars, most of the depreciation has already occurred, meaning you lose less money over time.

3. Lower Insurance Premiums
Insurance for used cars is typically cheaper. This reduces your ongoing costs and can make your budget go further.

4. Wider Selection
When buying a used car in Australia, you’re not limited to the latest models. You can explore previous years’ vehicles that are still in excellent condition.

Step 1: Set Your Budget

Before searching for a vehicle, decide how much you’re willing to spend. Consider:

  • Purchase price
  • Stamp duty and registration
  • Insurance costs
  • Ongoing maintenance and fuel expenses

If you need finance, get pre-approval from your bank or ask about dealership financing options.

Step 2: Decide on the Type of Car You Need

Think about your lifestyle and driving needs:

  • Small cars are ideal for city driving and better fuel economy.
  • SUVs offer space for families and long trips.
  • Utes or 4WDs are perfect for work and off-road use.
  • Electric or hybrid cars are great for environmentally conscious buyers.

Make a list of features that matter most—like fuel efficiency, safety features, size, and tech add-ons.

Step 3: Start Your Search

Use trusted sources to find quality vehicles:

  • Reputable Dealerships like JZ Motors offer a wide range of inspected used cars.
  • Online Platforms such as Carsales, Drive, and Gumtree.
  • Classified Ads in local newspapers or community boards.

JZ Motors, located in Ferntree Gully, VIC, provides buyers peace of mind with a 120-point safety check and a 1-year extended warranty.

Step 4: Check the Vehicle History

Before committing, always verify:

1. PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) Report
This confirms the car isn’t stolen, under finance, or written off.

2. Service History
A complete logbook shows the vehicle was well-maintained.

3. Odometer Reading
Compare the mileage with the vehicle’s age. Excessively low or high readings could indicate issues.

4. Previous Ownership
Less frequent ownership changes often mean better maintenance.

Step 5: Inspect the Car Thoroughly

Whether you’re an expert or not, inspection is vital:
Exterior:

  • Scratches, dents, rust, or mismatched paint.
  • Tyre condition and alignment.

Interior:

  • Functioning lights, aircon, infotainment system.
  • Seat condition and dashboard warnings.

Under the Hood:

  • Check oil levels, coolant, and battery.
  • Look for leaks or unusual noises.

If unsure, get a pre-purchase inspection from a licensed mechanic.

Step 6: Take a Test Drive

Never skip the test drive when buying a used car in Australia. It helps you assess:

  • Engine responsiveness and smoothness
  • Braking power and noise
  • Transmission performance
  • Steering and suspension handling
  • Visibility and comfort

Drive it under different conditions—urban streets, highways, and hills if possible.

Step 7: Compare Similar Options

Even if you like a car, it’s wise to compare:

  • Other makes and models in the same category
  • Prices across dealerships
  • Ownership costs like parts and service frequency

JZ Motors lists detailed car specs online, making comparison shopping easier and transparent.

Step 8: Understand the Legal Requirements

1. Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)
Required in most states. It proves the vehicle meets minimum safety standards.

2. Registration Transfer
Buyers must complete this within 14 days in most regions. This involves paperwork and fees.

3. Stamp Duty
A government fee based on car value, payable upon ownership transfer.

4. Proof of Purchase
Keep a signed invoice or contract for legal and finance purposes.

Step 9: Know Your Rights as a Buyer

When purchasing from a licensed dealer, like JZ Motors, you are protected by Australian Consumer Law (ACL):

  • The vehicle must be of acceptable quality.
  • It must match the description.
  • You have the right to remedies for major faults.

Private sales offer fewer protections, so weigh your options carefully.

Step 10: Secure Your Insurance

You’ll need Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance to legally drive in Australia. Additionally, consider:

  • Comprehensive insurance for accident and theft protection
  • Third-party property insurance for covering others’ property

Compare quotes from multiple insurers for the best deal.

Step 11: Finalise Payment

Dealerships often offer:

  • Flexible payment plans
  • Trade-in options for your old car
  • Extended warranties and add-ons

Ensure you receive a full receipt, warranty details, and any agreed extras.

Why Choose a Dealership Like JZ Motors?

JZ Motors is a trusted name for buying a used car in Australia because:

  • Over 30 years in business
  • 120-point vehicle safety checks
  • 7-day exchange guarantee
  • Complimentary 1-year warranty
  • Finance options and nationwide delivery

Choosing a reputable dealer means less stress and more confidence.

Maintenance Tips to Maximise the Lifespan of Your Used Car

May 27, 2025 by Jeff Zaninelli

Buying a used car is a smart financial decision for many drivers in Melbourne and its surrounding suburbs. With the right care, your pre-owned vehicle can offer dependable service for many years. Whether you’re commuting through Ferntree Gully, cruising the Dandenong Ranges, or navigating Melbourne’s city streets, regular maintenance is key to keeping your car in top condition.

In this guide, we’ll cover essential maintenance tips for extending the life of your used car, so you get the most out of your investment.

1. Stick to a Regular Service Schedule

Your car’s manual will tell you how often it needs to be serviced. Usually, this is every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or every 6 to 12 months. Regular servicing helps catch small problems before they become major issues.

During a service, mechanics will check your oil, brakes, filters, fluids, and more. These checks help your car stay safe, efficient, and long-lasting.

Tip: Don’t wait for a problem to appear. Prevention is better than cure, especially with cars.

2. Check and Change the Engine Oil

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car. It keeps the engine parts moving smoothly and prevents overheating. Dirty or old oil can lead to engine damage.

Check the oil level every few weeks and top it up if needed. Change the oil and oil filter based on the manufacturer’s recommendations — usually every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometres.

Simple Rule: Clean oil = Happy engine.

3. Keep Your Tyres in Good Condition

Tyres affect how your car drives, how it stops, and even how much fuel it uses. Make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. You can find this information in your car’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door.

Check tyre tread regularly. Bald or worn-out tyres can be dangerous, especially on wet roads. Rotate your tyres every 10,000 kilometres to ensure even wear.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to check your spare tyre too.

4. Don’t Ignore Warning Lights

Modern cars are smart — they tell you when something is wrong. If a warning light pops up on your dashboard, don’t ignore it. It might be something small, like low tyre pressure, or something serious, like a brake system problem.

Get the issue checked by a mechanic as soon as possible. Catching problems early can save you money and keep you safe.

5. Replace Air Filters

Your engine needs clean air to run efficiently. Over time, the air filter can get dirty and clogged, making your engine work harder and reducing fuel efficiency.

Replace the air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometres, depending on where and how you drive. If you often drive in dusty areas, you may need to change it more often.

6. Keep Your Car Clean — Inside and Out

It might not seem like a big deal, but cleaning your car helps protect it from rust, corrosion, and wear. Wash the exterior regularly to remove dirt, salt, and grime. Don’t forget to clean the underbody, especially after driving in rain or mud.

Vacuum and wipe down the interior to prevent wear and tear on seats, dashboards, and carpets. A clean car not only looks good, but also lasts longer.

Local Tip: If you’re in Melbourne or nearby suburbs like Ferntree Gully, consider using professional car cleaning services a few times a year.

7. Take Care of the Battery

A dead battery is a common reason for breakdowns. Check your battery’s terminals for corrosion and keep them clean. Make sure the battery is properly secured.

If your car struggles to start or the battery is older than 3 years, have it tested or replaced.

Pro Tip: Drive your car regularly, especially if it’s parked for long periods, to keep the battery charged.

8. Use Quality Fuel and Fluids

Good-quality fuel helps keep your engine clean and efficient. Don’t go for the cheapest option all the time — use fuel that matches your car’s requirements.

Also, check and maintain other important fluids:

  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Coolant
  • Power steering fluid

9. Drive Gently

Your driving habits have a big impact on your car’s lifespan. Avoid hard braking, quick acceleration, and rough cornering. These can wear out your engine, brakes, and tyres faster.

Also, avoid driving with a heavy load unless needed. The more weight your car carries, the harder it has to work.

10. Protect Your Car from the Elements

Melbourne weather can be unpredictable. Try to park your car in a garage or shaded area to protect it from the sun, rain, and hail. If you don’t have covered parking, consider using a car cover.

Sun exposure can damage your paint, dashboard, and upholstery over time. Keeping your car protected will help it look newer for longer.

Being nineteen (and partner 21) at the time, and buying a car from a dealer, I thought we would be up against folk who treated us with little respect. This was absolutely not the case here! The first car we looked at on our hunt was the one we ended up buying. We've had it close to a year now, and put an additional 70,000km on it, completely trouble free. Thanks guys.read more

Was a little nervous about buying a used vehicle but these guys really made me feel welcome. Sold me a great car at a great price with some generous extras (warranty, RACV cover etc) and gave me a very reasonable price for my old one. Car had a little issue that needed fixing (it happens with second hands) but they were very nice and apologetic about it. Had the issue resolved promptly, no-questions-asked and now it runs wonderfully. Really exemplary after-sales service. Would go there again.read more

Bought a navara st-x d40 from these guys. Had some issues, but they help me out and I'm happy. I was probably a bit rude when the problems propped up, but they did the right thing and helped me get it all sorted. My nav now has a new clutch, and drives awesome. I appreciate AJ and Scott over at cool core radiators for doing such a great job. Also a special thanks to Paul at JZ motors for being a great guy and professional, even after I sent some rude messages. Thanks guys, I appreciate all the support.read more

Last Friday I turned up at JZ Motors. I was greeted straight away by Paul. I told him what I was looking for, he pointed me directly to what I had in mind. Details of the vehicles were explained in real person terms, so I understood he said. I test drove 3 Toyota’s and ended up choosing a Camry. Whilst we were in the I met with Jeff, the owner and the deal was done. I’m extremely happy with my new car and very impressed with the way I was treated. I would recommend JZ Motors to anyone. Thanks again Sandra F (a very happy customer)read more

If you want a typical cars salesman that will say anything to close the deal, then please keep walking. But if you can handle a dose of straight shooting, down to earth guys, then you might get a good laugh and a damn good car too. Well worth the extra drive to get there.read more

I bought my Defender 130 from Paul and Jeff...They were bombarded with calls from the "Defender Crazies" but I was the lucky one to get it. It's 15 years old Defender so has it's issues but they sorted out Fuel Pump, Doors, new brakes, full service, light switch and a number of small items before I took delivery! The doors were still an issue but they were happy to give it another go and it was sorted, no questions asked. I've since asked for their advice on a number of improvements I've wanted to make to it and they were great at putting me in touch with local shops and arranging good prices. Thanks Guys...Let me know first when you get your hands on another Defender and thanks for all the favours!read more
